Charitable Remainder Unitrusts
(Who should serve as trustee?)
A unitrust is a separate legal entity which must be managed by a trustee. You may appoint any trustee you wish. Most people appoint a bank. Some name their accountant. Some donors name themselves as trustee or co-trustee.
Audubon has a years-long relationship with State Street Global Advisors in Boston, MA, under which they manage our charitable assets. We recommend that Audubon donors appoint State Street as trustee of their unitrusts. Our donors have been pleased with State Street’s performance, service, and expertise. Audubon donors who select State Street also benefit from very reasonable management fees.
You should be aware that the accounting rules for unitrusts are complicated and different than for non-charitable trusts. If you wish to name a trustee other than State Street, we urge you to select a bank which does substantial business managing charitable trusts. Our staff will be happy to help you evaluate the credentials of any trustee you are considering.
